The 10 Unalienable Rights of the TV Series Fan

From “Petit éloge des séries télé”, by Martin Winckler (translated from French).

  1. The right to watch all kinds of shows (not just the ones “intellectuals” and “experts” deem well-made).

  2. The right to watch a show when one wants, how one wants and where one wants, without being censored.

  3. The right to watch a show without being judged or scorned.

  4. The right to start a show at the beginning and lose interest; the right to start a show in the middle after putting it off or hesitating.

  5. The right to love (or hate) without having to justify oneself.

  6. The right to sample some shows and devour others.

  7. The right to watch one’s favourite episodes countless times.

  8. The right to consider some characters close friends.

  9. The right, while watching a show, to laugh and cry, to feel understood and valued, enlightened and informed.

  10. The right to talk or write to express one’s tastes.
